A Review of the 2000 Season
The 2000 Season will not be fondly remembered as it witnessed the disappointing relegation of the 1st XI to the Second Division. One will always look in hindsight at the reasons, particularly as the playing strength should never have dictated such a demise. The bowlers played their part adequately but the batting relied too much on James Runciman (who overall hit 844 runs) and James Hill who both had excellent seasons. Several players showed consistent lack of form and losing Richard Alston to injury for most of the season was a big loss. On the bright side, the introduction of youngsters Billy Rhone and Robert Runciman to the side at the back end of the season gave great hopes for the future.
A number of colts were also blooded in the 2nd XI which looked destined for relegation for most of the season but were fortunately able to get things together late on and escape the fate as the 1st XI with some comfort.
The 3rd XI contradicted early forecasts by having a most excellent season being in the promotion frame for most of the time. Congratulations must go to skipper Paul Hart who led by example and had a magnificent season with the ball, and was Club leading wicket taker with 45 despite only playing on Saturdays. Once again the colts showed their mettle and visibly grew in stature as the season progressed.
On Sundays we lost to those Cup Masters Teddington in the first round but we put the poor Saturday League form to one side as we went on a Cup run to reach the last 16 of the Evening Standard. Northwood, Fives and Heronians and Hoddesdon were all despatched before we finally succumbed to Middlesex League Giants Richmond.
Only four games were completed in the Herts and Essex Sunday League which were all won, including a game at Sawbridgeworth where a whirlwind 113 vfrom Ron Graves inspired Chingford to a huge 354-7 from their 45 overs.
