The Wormcasts

The 'Casts' are a wandering team that plays occasional fixtures. The side is run by Chingford's Michael Blake and features numerous ex-Test Match and Chingford cricketers. They regularly play Chingford on the Monday of Cricket Week.
It was the Winter of 1983 and Chingford Cricket Club’s Centenary Committee were putting together the final touches to the Centenary Celebrations.
The Centenary Committee was chaired by Buddy Jessop, with Mike Higgs and Mike Blake making up the quorum and a "boozy" session was taking place at Buddy’s splendid house in Sewardestonebury.
The conversation turned to the subject of the Centenary Cricket Week, something the Club hadn’t attempted since the 1950s. Fixtures had already been arranged for the Tuesday to the Friday against Essex CCC, The Mayor’s XI, The Stock Exchange and the MCC but the question arose as to what to do with the Monday.
It was agreed that the Club should invite an invitation XI and that we would invite 2 players from each of the Club’s 5 favourite opponents. That list included Barnet and Saffron Walden. It would be interesting to see if any of the same 5 Clubs selected would make the same list in 2023 ! Numerous Wormcasts Team and Action Photographs can be found by clicking the link here:

Jeff Runciman was the natural choice to skipper and with his vast array of friends from his countless years as Sunday B skipper he set about selecting a side.
However the side still remained nameless until Buddy blurted out of the top of his head "Let's call it the Wormcasts" …and so the legend began on 16 July 1984.

Wormcasts Miscellany
- The game has never been rained off in 39 years
- The Casts have only ever had 3 Captains: Jeff Runciman, Peter Norgate and Michael Blake
- All of the results are known but 2 of the scorecards are incomplete (1985 and xxx)
- The latest declaration by The Casts was 6.02pm (2006)
- The Casts give misleading selection information to the opposition to confuse them . In 2004 Chingford were informed that Dave Houghton was to be playing , only for him to be commentating on Sky Sports at 1.15pm on the matchday!
- The match is accepted on the understanding there are drinks every hour on the hour. In 2004 drinks were brought out to the Casts after 3 overs of fielding !
- In 1985 Barry Ironton turned up a week late for the match
- First centurion for the Casts was Andy Lenton – with 102 no in 1988
- Fraser Lawrence and Steve Wilson both got centuries in the same match in 2009….off their own bowling!
....And finally.......The Casts went unbeaten from 2002 to 2010.
