A Review of the 1965 Season

1965 saw the formation of a sub-committee under the chairmanship of Les Warner to formulate plans for the building of a new pavilion. The original intention was for the location to be in the north west corner of the ground (the Kimberley Way entrance) but this was not acceptable to the Council. The south east corner was then chosen because the south west corner would have meant that the pavilion was only 35 yards from the square, though unfortunately the cost of utilities would be higher. The plan was also to include the provision of three tennis courts and car parking. On the field the 1st XI won four games from twenty one, with twelve draws and five defeats. Ted Sandrock hit an unbeaten 104 against Wanstead, while the bowlers – with Bryan Hart and Buddy Jessop (including 6-31 v Winchmore Hill) in tremendous form – clamoured for the Queen Elizabeth End which had no sightscreen. Thanks to the generosity of the Waltham Forest Playing Fields Association and the work of Ted Lord, a new screen was to be ready for the 1966 season. Peter Brown recorded the amazing figures of 13-10-9-5 in the win over Mill Hill.
In the Sunday As Harry Davis hit a massive 142 not out in the all day game at home to Lensbury, while in the 3rd XI Bunny Swinfen took 3 wickets in 4 balls as he turned in a superb all round performance in the defeat of Chelmsford with 7-23 with the ball and 32 with the bat. Ken Dowding hit a century in the home game v Old Minchendenians. Meanwhile in the Sunday Bs, Tom Shepherd captured 8 wickets in the away game at Enfield.
In higher spheres, Doug Insole had been elected Chairman of the England Selection Committee.
