Chingford Cricket Club

Club Captain for 1938 was Harold Fruin and results were generally poor on Saturdays but better on Sundays – so the season was a real mixed bag of results. Three teams were fielded on Saturdays, the 3^rd XI played their games at Forest Side and were allocated six home dates on the fixture card. On Sundays there was generally just one team, with an occasional Sunday B eleven fielded. Cricket Week was the first week of August.

From the games we know about, results were as follows:

Noel Westerhout was top run scorer with 883, followed by George Chapman with 853, while Len Parslow hit 674 runs in just 13 innings. With the ball, Bill Adamson took 74 wickets followed by Gordon Downes with 46, while Jock Harwood, restricted to just 13 appearances still captured 43 wickets!

Don Spencer turned in a superb all round performance in the Sunday As home game v Highams Park in August. Not being satisfied with an unbeaten 125, he followed up with a hat trick and bowling figures of 5-31. Len Parslow also made 114 in the same game as Chingford posted a mammoth 271-2.

Other centurions were George Chapman 117 v Winchmore Hill and Noel Westerhout 117 v Walthamstow both for the 1sts. Len Parslow hit 105 v Chelmsford in Cricket Week and Stanley Bland made 123 for the 2nds v Caribonum, while for the Sunday As Harold Fruin (104 v Band of Batchelors) and Alan Mainwaring (102 v Enfield) made it to three figures.

With the ball, there were two seven wicket hauls, George Chapman with a splendid 7-30 v Chinghoppers and Bill Adamson  with 7-42 v Forestors for the 2s. 

At the Committee Meeting on 17 November 1938 the Secretary reported on a letter he had received from Mr. Street of the Old Felsteadians (who I believe used the ground for hockey in the Winter) who said that he would like a heavy roller put on every week. The Committee instructed the Secretary to write to Mr Street and inform him that this could be done, but the Old Felsteadians would have to pay for the horse to pull the heavy roller as they had done in previous years.

In the Tennis Section the Cornish Challenge Cup was won by Miss B Tonge (Ladies’ Singles) and Mr WR Harper (Men’s Singles) and the Petingall-Norbury Trophy (Mixed Doubles) was won by Miss E Mardall and Mr WH Jeffrey. Several matches were arranged with Meadow LTC and Rectory Manor LTC, all either on Mondays or Fridays. The ladies team won one match out of four played, their first victory since 1936.
