1911 SEASON

A Review of the 1911 Season

For the season 1911, we only have details of three matches.

The first was for the 1st XI at home to Barclay on 10 June. Barclay were a club whose ground was in Barclay Oval, Woodford Green, near the Horse and Wells. Barclay made 167-6 and in reply we were all out for 90 – highlights for Chingford being J Fudge (26) and Willie Longden (25) with the bat and two wickets apiece from Barber and Howes.

Chingford gained some revenge in the 2nd XI fixture between the same Clubs the following Saturday when after scoring 128-6 declared, we bowled out Barclay for 58, but these are the only details we have of this match.

The third match was the 1st XI away to Buckhurst Hill on 29 July 1911, where we were defeated. Chingford batted first and were all out for 76, F Locke top scoring with 20, batting at number 9. In reply Club stalwarts Willie Longden (4 wickets), H Greenwood (4 wickets) and AL Barber (2 wickets) all put up a fight, but Buckhurst Hill had made it to 161 before their last wicket was taken.

References to Pelham CC have been found, so they were still around and Chingford Tradesmen CC were also still going – they played at The Rolls. A further club called Chingford Taverners CC had also appeared.

The Club now has amongst its archives a Pelham CC Fixture Card for 1911. President of the Club was FC Whitbread whilst The Treasurer was WE Peel, address: The Brewery, Chiswell Street – which still exists. There was a connection with Chingford CC in that the Secretary was also a Chingford member – Francis de la Cour. Pelham’s Fixture List included a game v Chingford scheduled for 12 Aug at The Pelham, and also included a railway timetable, presumably for players travelling to and from the game!
