A Review of the 2002 Season

The Club enjoyed a generally satisafactory season as the extra half hour provided a very positive input. Newly promoted, the 1st XI did not perform as hoped due to a lack of consistency which probably stemmed from several bowlers being afflicted by injury. The excellent bowling of Jon Dyers who took 41 wickets did not, as a result, get sufficient back up. The potential of the side was always identifiable with victories over both the sides which gained promotion to the Premier, the elimination of two Premiership sides from the League Cup and once again a fine run in the Evening Standard Trophy. With the absence of injuries, we would espect a much improved season next year.

The 2nd XI showed no after effects from the disappointment of relegation last year by winning their division in style. The main feature was the significant progress shown by our youngsters who made up the nucleus of the side; indeed Ryan Harris and Ben MacGregor played several 1st XI games. Richard MacGregor took a hat trick against stanford le Hope (but if you look carefully at the scorebook you'll spot the victims were batsmen 9,10 and 11 !)

The 3rd XI under the stewardship of 19 year old Stephen Thorne, also had a fine season against the expected odds with once agai, several young players making significant progress. The future certainly augers well particularly as the colts section under the direction of James Hill and Mark Campbell has blossomed beyond all recognition.

On Suindays John Dyers took a hat trick in the home Chess Valley league match with Knebworth Park. Also in the Chess Valley on Sunday 8 September the most amazing game took place at Harrow - Chingford needed a win to secure promotion and Harrow, also seeking promotion needed a tie. Harrow knocked up a seemingly unassailable 327-6 but centuries from Mather and McMurray saw Chingford reach the last 2 overs needing 5 for victory. The scores ended level on 327-9 but the match aggregate of 654 is believed to be a Club record.

Extraordinarily on Saturday 21 September in the end of season friendly against Shenfield , Chingford bowled out the opposition in just 8.2 overs for 28, a feat made even more amazing by the fact that the wickets were shared between four bowlers.
