The final match before war broke out on 4 September 1939, was against the Chinghoppers on Sun 27 August – Chinghoppers chased Chingford’s total of 214, replying win a narrow win on 220 , despite Gordon Downes bagging an excellent 8-55. There is no record of any further cricket in 1939.
