1909 SEASON

A Review of the 1909 Season

Kelly’s Directory of 1909 shows Chingford Cricket Club’s address as The Green, Chingford. It is believed that the ground was a small one on the north side of Chingford Green behind the Police Station in an area called Sunnyside – roughly where Parkhill Road is now.

It appears that the Club was becoming stronger cricket-wise with Loughton now fielding their 1st XI against ours. Buckhurst Hill also appeared on the fixture list for the first time.  There was also a second team, called the “A” eleven, and some midweek fixtures.

Results we have were as follows, but we have no records of any matches after June

Hector Munro produced another Bank Holiday Monday spectacular, when on Monday 31 May he hit another enormous score with 137 v Edmonton in Chingford’s 1st innings total of 311. Hector was again the Club’s leading run scorer with 285 – while Francis De La Cour with 79 v Charing Cross, J Neal with 62 v Snaresbrook and Patrick Munro with 59 v Chingford Tradesmen also made half-centuries

With the ball a new name led the way, PN Howes with 18 wickets. RH Harwood v Edmonton and R Edsall v Spartan both had seven wicket hauls.

1909 saw the Club’s last visit to Gillwellbury CC who played at Gillwell Park. This was the private cricket ground of EH Wales who had played for Chingford previously, before and after the Club was reformed in 1903.

The Annual General Meeting was held in October and the Woodford Times reported:

CHINGFORD CRICKET CLUB

The annual general meeting of the above club took place on Friday at the Avenue Café, Chingford. The hon treasurer, Mr HW Smith took the chair. The Secretary, Mr RH Harwood stated that the position of the club was one of success in every way. Mr H Munro had again scored a century for the club, and the consistent form of Mr P Munro, Barber, Steinchen, WG Longden, RW Russell and JW Marshall was commented on and Mr Allen whose services as umpire were indispensable.

The Club again held a winter concert at The Royal Forest Hotel in December.
