A Review of the 2004 Season
by Jeff Runciman
The 2004 Season was a very pleasant one which saw the club grow in strength as new players fitted in and young players developed increasing prowess. The 1st XIs league season could not have started worse being thrashed by Wickford and Brentwood whilst collecting no points. With six new players of 1st XI standard having joined the club much more was expected. The side showed signs of gelling in a well earned draw with Hornchurch which gave the side much needed confidence. From here on in the next 15 games showed championship form with 9 wins and just one defeat at the hands of Chelmsford by the narrow margin of 10 runs.
Promotion remained a distinct possibility as we took on champions Wickford in the final game. We had to win and Hornchurch had to fail. Magnificent batting enabled Chingford to declare on 252 for one after 49 overs with Mac Meade scoring 139 not out. Wickford meanwhile despite facing 58 overs managed 201 for nine in reply. Fortunately Hornchurch won their match so the disappointment of not forcing the win was not as great. The key to Chingford's successful season can be attributed to its four prong spin attack which was responsible for 70% of the wickets, with Neeraj Odedra taking 37 wickets and Angelo Bass 26.
Sundays followed pretty much the same scenario as the A XI won all their Chess Valley League games to win promotion and also the prize of £500 worth of cricket gear plus a cheque for £75. It is a pity that our sponsorship does not allow for such rewards on a Saturday.
The 2nd XI had a half decent season with the nice blend of former 1st XI experience and the exuberance of promising youth. They will look back on what might have been as they are certainly a side that shuold have been promotion contenders. Once again skipper Richard MacGregor led from the front taking 42 wickets whilst Mike Lyon frequently featured with his all-round performances - most notably against Horndon on the Hill when having caused a monumental collapse by taking 5 wickets for 6 runs, he then went on to score 50 not out to win the game.
The 3rd XI maintained mid table respectably under Paul Hart whilst witnessing further progress from our younger players, particularly Marc Fletcher who scored 128 not out against Shenfield before being promoted to open the batting for the 2nd XI and averaging nearly 40 in his nine innings with a top score of 88 not out.
For the first time we entered a 4th XI into the League and although not able to fulfill all our fixtures, it proved to be very beneficial in giving our colts valuable experience. Remarkable indeed was the performance of 13 year old Jonathan North who scored an undefeated 145 against Loughton enabling a declaration after just 33 overs. Many thanks to Mark Campbell for giving up his time to run this eleven.
