A Review of the 1941 Season

Previewing the forthcoming season, the Woodford Times Reported:

MEMBERS NEEDED FOR CRICKET AND TENNIS SECTIONS

The annual meeting of Chingford Cricket and Lawn Tennis Club was held on Saturday, Mr J Wisbey taking the chair

The following officers were appointed: Captain of the club Mr G Downes; Secretary Mr J Jessop; Treasurer Mr C Arkell; Match Secretary H Day (foregoing with Mr G Richardson forming the Committee); Team Secretary Mr B Tucker.

The cricket section will be running two Saturday sides and one Sunday side and there is practically a full fixture list.

The tennis section will carry on as usual and in order to encourage new members the subscription has been reduced. The subscription of £1 1s (10s 6d) if under eighteen years) enables members to play both tennis and cricket, although an additional 2s 6d (which includes tea) is payable for every home cricket match played – away matches 1s.

Members supply their own balls for tennis.

Intending new members are advised to get in touch with Mr Jessop of 20 Douglas Road E4 or Mr Day of 41 Balgonie Road E4

Also at the AGM it was reported that the Club might not be able to get an allotment of tea and sugar from the local Food Controller… and it was agreed that if tea was unobtainable the members of the Club should supply some from their own rations.

Jock Harwood had another outstanding season – his return from 31 games being a magnificent 126 wickets (at 7.4 apiece). F Taylor was the next highest wicket taker with 55.

In a year when runs were hard to come by there was only one century, Alan Mainwaring with 104 for the Sunday XI v Ford Sports. Highest run aggregate was Harold Pryor with just 350.

A number of charity games were played – with The Red Cross Charity Match on Sunday 8 June won by the Chinghoppers by 62 runs, despite Jock Harwood capturing 6-28. The game against Wanstead on Sunday 13 July was attended by The Mayor of Chingford (Alderman Mrs EK Stuteley JP) who was introduced to the players. This was in aid of the Chingford Spitfire Fund and Jock Harwood took 8-49 to spin Chingford to victory.

One of the best ever bowling analysis in the history of the Club came in the 2nd XI game with Winchmore Hill when F. Taylor took a rare 9fer – with 9-41, but still ended up on the losing side!

Meanwhile Bill Adamson picked up a hat-trick in the 2nd XI match with Clayhall.

In one of the lowest scoring games ever, at home to Lapointe, the Sunday XI were bundled out for just 18 with 4 extras in the total, and Cliff Crafer scoring 5 – in reply Chingford gaining some revenge by then bowling the opposition out for 34, with Jock Harwood taking 8 for 13 !

The Second XI batting fared little better when in the home game v Old Parkonians on 30 August, they were bundled out for 22, although the tables were turned when two weeks later on 13 September they dismissed Calthorpe for 21.

Previewing the match on Sunday 7 September, the Guardian said:

A very strong side of club cricketers has been got together by Mr Reg Smith to play the Chingford CC of which he is a member for the groundsman’s benefit at Forest Side on Sunday.

The visiting side will provide the interesting spectacle of a father and son LW and DL Newman batting in the same side. Len Newman is one of the best known players in club cricket, and is scorer of 202 centuries, a record for club cricket. The 4138 runs he made in 1935 must be a record for any type of cricket. In addition to these two, another Alexandra Park club member, CS Davies is included. He has played many times for his county (Warwickshire) and is reputed to be the best all rounder in club cricket. A further attraction is HM Forde the well-known West Indies opening bat and brilliant field.

Play will commence at 12noon; admission is free, and a collection will be taken.

R Smith’s XI: R Smith (Chingford), LW Newman, DL Newman and CS Davies (Alexandra Park), HM Forde (West Indies), B Rice (Aberdeenshire), L Foster and JK Rhoden (Buckhurst Hill), N James (South Woodford), H Fearne (Chingford) and W Horsey (West Essex)

The match itself saw the prolific Len Newman bowled by Don Spencer for a duck ! - Don and Jock Harwood both taking identical figures of 4-11 to restrict Reg Smith’s XI to 134. Despite a battling 34 from Cliff Crafer, Chingford fell just short on 121 all out.
