A Review of the 1921 Season
The fixture card shows Chingford fielding a Saturday 1st and 2nd teams and a Thursday Eleven.
Cricket Week was the first week of August with the opposition being Liverpool Victoria, Lauderdale, North of Thames, Essex Club and Ground and Stoics, and in the latter game W Barkas with 8-27 had the season’s best bowling figures. H Culpin also took 8 wickets in the home game v Woodford Thursday.
From the First XI and Cricket Week games only 7 matches were won, with eleven draws and nine defeats
Vice captain Bill Riding scored 1305 runs in only 19 completed innings including an amazing 202* v Liverpool Victoria on the August Bank Holiday and he also scored 5 other centuries during the year against London Hospital, Cox’s Bank, South Woodford, Cheshunt and Lauderdale. Such form was spotted by the County and he played for Essex in their match v Lancashire scoring 23 runs in 2 innings.
In the 2s RH Harwood hit an impressive 151 against Walthamstow and 102 v Pascalls of Mitcham.
It appears that a compromise was reached between the Cricket and Tennis sections in that the Tennis Section, with membership standing at 120 in 1921, agreed to forfeit 4 of their courts and their membership had to be reduced to 60-80 members.
