Match report Bill and Ben’s efforts fail to flower into a win as Chingford go to pot
WOODFORD Wells somehow scraped a draw from this one-sided derby contest at Chingford on Saturday. The hosts' spin attack failed to take full advantage of a healthy runs total on a wicket which was always going to help their play. Chingford elected to bat first and soon took a firm grip as Billy Rhone (64) and Ben MacGregor (54) put on 118 for the first wicket in 28 overs. But then the hosts struggled briefly as four wickets fell for 16 runs, although Greg Hales was able to take the game away from Wells, as a blistering 68 not out enabled Chingford to declare a total of 232-6.
The visitors began their reply cautiously as Will Rogers (30) and Rob Leiper (27) put on 46 after the early loss of Shankar Gunalan for seven. The hosts four-prong spin attack began to turn the screws, but despite bowling 57 overs, Wells weathered the storm with their defensive approach and held on for the draw with a final total of 135-9. McMurray turned in the best figures for Chingford, taking 4-40.
