Match report
On a damp track, the Skipper lost the toss again, as is becoming habitual for him in league cricket and unsurprisingly, Chingford were asked to bat.
Both Miles and Roy looked good early on. Miles played a couple of lusty blows before falling for eight and Roy batted well for his twenty and perhaps should've got more. John was out cheaply unfortunately and Chingford were required to do some re-building. Paul Canham and Dan Carver dug themselves in and waited patiently for any bad balls to keep the scoreboard ticking, scoring runs at a similar rate to each other. Mid-afternoon the heavens opened, whilst Paul was on 35 and Dan on 34. The downpour lasted for about ten minutes and didn't appear to have any adverse effect on the pitch.
Dan was out soon after play resumed, only adding 5 runs to his score, whilst Paul went on to make his first fifty of the season (bearing in mind that this was also his first game of the season!) Coulson and Noori both made useful contributions and Chingford finished on a respectable 202 after their fifty two, with a wicket in hand.
Richard Offord and Nadir opened the bowling, with Nadir bowling particularly well, picking up two wickets in his six over spell. But as has been the case early season, taking the pace off the ball paid dividends, as Steven Thorne picked up a further four wickets to add to his impressive total for the season and Harty turning in an economical spell that gave him figures of 2-19 from 9 overs, including the wicket of their useful left hand no.3 bat.
Aaron Hill and Dan Carver were both expensive, but ironically aided the win as they opened the game up and gave the opposition an incentive of going after the runs! The return of Thorne, soon meant that the innings was wrapped up though, aided by some hostile bowling from Offord in his second spell, as well as some useful fielding throughout the innings. With a team of ten men, Westcliffe were unable to hang out for a draw and Chingford took the twenty points. A well deserved first league win for the home side.
