Match report
This was not the strongest Chingford side to take the field this season. We were missing Nadir Noori (gone for the rest of the summer) Myles Joyce and David Joslin (both in the 2nds) Paul Canham, Michael Haigh (working) and Marc Fletcher (holiday). On the plus side, Andrew Chipchase and Graem Peters were back although the former was not fit to bowl and the latter, keep. Michael Blake, following an 8 for in the 4ths, was up to suppliment the bowling.
Despite winning last week, Chelmsford are a mid table side who we were confident of beating. Dan Carver lost the toss but got what he wanted, the opposition batting first. The best possible start came when Peters took a catch off the first ball of the match. At 19-3 and 55-4, Chingford were clearly on top with Roy Williams taking two fine slip catches. Their young No 4 scored 92 and led the rest of their young lower order in a batting recovery. At 164-7, with the No 4 gone, Chingford were thinking about an early tea. However, the resistance continued and it was not until Coulson returned for his second spell that the innings was wound up.
The Chingford reply was slow, which in itself was not too much a problem, but losing wickets at the same time made it a big problem. A pitch that had seemed to play reasonably well before tea, seemed to miss behave after; the ball stopping a little and bouncing a bit more than expected. This induced a number of false shots from batters who should not have had difficulty against modest bowling. Coulson came to the wicket at 46-5 wanting to leave early for a social event and batted like their was no tomorrow. Chingford never got in the position to launch a challenge to the 237 target. When Offord walked to the wicket with just under 16 overs to go, a draw was predicted with some confidence and achieved. Offord now has a batting average of 40.
