West Essex v Chingford Cricket Club Sat 3rd on Sat 27 Aug 2005 at 1300
Chingford Cricket Club Lost 4 wickets

Match report West Essex were second bottom of the table and desperate for a win to avoid being relegated for the second season running. Chingford's goal now remains trying to finish third. Dan Carver returned to lead a Chingford side stripped of virtually all its top order batting; Myles Joyce, Andy Chipchase, Peter Shawyer and Mark Fletcher were in the 2nd XI, Paul Canham and David Joslin were on holiday and working. Even Roy Williams was unavailable. Furthermore, Richie Coulson's side strain will keep him out for the rest of the season. John Woodland came up from the 4ths and Chris Baldock came back in. Carver lost the toss and Chingford were put in on a wicket that was dry, reasonably hard and fairly true. Anything short sat up a bit and West Essex bowlers bowled plenty of those balls early on. The left handed opening pair also took advantage of some leg side bowling and were racing along at a rate of more than 5 an over for the first 10 overs. The 5th bowler used dismissed Peters with his first delivery. The opening stand was worth 72. Chingford took a long time to get out of the 70s and lost another 2 wickets in doing so. Woodland and Baldock got things going again and put on a 69 run stand, ensuring that we were capable of batting out our overs. Baldock's excellent knock was a big plus for the team. Despite a late loss of wickets, the bonus points target of 175 was reached in the 52nd over.
At the halfway stage, some of us felt that we were about 40 runs light of a good score, others were grateful that we managed to post a defendable score of 176. With a strongish bowling attack, a win was still possible. Baldock took a wicket with his first ball (caught behind) but struggled to bowl a decent line and length thereafter. Carver rotated his bowlers giving Offord two spells. However, their quick scoring ensured that they approached the Chingford total with only 4 wickets down. With the match all but lost, Carver's decision to bowl a couple of colts at the end was perhaps his best bit of fortune all day as both Hill and MacGregor claimed their first wickets for the 3rd XI.
A weak Chingford side performed with credit and a good natured game ended in the best of spirits.
