Chelmsford v Chingford Cricket Club Sat 3rd on Sat 03 Sep 2005 at 1300
Chingford Cricket Club Won 7 wickets
Match report
Chingford were bolstered on their visit to sunny Chelmsford by the return of David Joslin from holiday, Paul Canham from work and Nadir Noori from Pakistan, not to mention the elevation of Steve Hart from the 4th XI.
Chelmsford chose first use of a good batting strip on which a ball hardly deviated or misbehaved all day. However there was swing through the air for Offord who beat the outside edge of both openers with some degree of monotony. Incredibly both openors survived, getting the score up to 80. Wickets came from a variety of deliveries bowled from the opposite end to Offord, including a high full toss which neither umpire managed to call as 'no ball'. Offord continued to give his captain control and the key turning point came when the remaining opener was stumped by Peters off a rare leg side delivery from Offord. Joslin held two good catches and contributed to a run out of the No 11 bat during the 51st over. This was part of a very good all round team fielding performance.
Chelmsford stuck with the old ball and opened with a spinner who had taken 9 wickets the previous week. Despite losing 2 wickets early on, Chingford were scoring at a healthy rate of 4 an over. When Chelmsford took the new ball, they got it to swing and picked up the wicket of Canham. Peters and Canham put on 73. Carver and Peters kept their heads and after seeing off the new ball Carver raced towards the Chelmsford score, allowing Peters to hit the winning runs. Peters 50 came off 103 balls. It took him 29 balls to move from 40 to 41. Peters and Carver put on 66.
Man of the Match was undoubtedly Richard Offord for his immense bowling performance.
Graem Peters
From Chelmsford's website
Hasnain Panjwani (34) and Dave Goddard (34) gave the third team a solid start against Chingford. Unfortunately neither went on and the middle order rather subsided. It took sensible batting from Andrew Thurston (23*) to get Chelmsford to 177 all out. Peters (57*) gave stability to Chingford’s reply, steering them to a seven-wicket win. Six points are needed next week to secure their Division 1 status.
