Hertford v Chingford Cricket Club Sun B on Sun 05 Jun 2005 at 1400
Chingford Cricket Club Lost 64 runs

Match report Following not being able to get a team together last week, I manage to get together a half decent side against a normally strong Hertford. Following Graem Peters’ badly dislocating his pinkie on his left hand the previous day, I give Jonathon North his B XI debut and a chance to don on the gloves. Jonathon was not the only colt, he was joined with Harry Piper and Aaron Hill. Other than that, Graham ‘The Bullet’ Carpenter returned, following a three-week vacation in America seeing his family.

I was last to arrive on the ground even though I manage to get up to 125 mph on the A10, leaving Dan Carver in the distance.

Eric Liddle, Hertford’s captain won the toss and elected to bat, playing a timed match with only one ball, and 20 overs from 18:30. Things started ok, with Harry Piper bowling his first 5 overs with a nice line and length, accompanied with a bit of away swing to the right hander and in swing to the left hander. As most senior professionals up the club might know of Eric Liddle, as I was told by Michael Blake that he played for Hertfordshire a few years back. He opened the batting and showed no remorse to our bowlers, and reached his 50 very quickly. Play had to be stop for a brief spell of time, as Graham ‘The Bullet’ Carpenter bowled an unusual short ball to Eric Liddle, he hooked it behind square to Aaron Hill at short line leg, who was ready to take it in the long barrier position before the ball ferociously popped from nowhere, Aaron turned his head to avoid the ball hitting his glasses and copped the ball into the back of his head, and left the field of play to recuperate. We were left with a substitute during the time Aaron was off, in which one of them did drop Eric Liddle. Eric and his opening partner put on 231 for the first wicket, before the inclusion of Dan Carver, bowled both opening for 138 and 75 respectively. Nasser Rashid came on for a second spell and claimed two wickets and Hertford declared on 254 for 4.

As I had not bowled myself, I decided to open the batting with Peter Joslin on his 47th birthday, which I was not told at the time until his eldest nephew contacted me later that night. Peter’s third ball was put away like usual for 4 runs and then tried the same shot again and was bowled. Shakeel Kadri came in at 3, and produced a few of his cameo role shots before I was bowled for 3, playing down the wrong bloody line again, and ended my chances of batting myself higher than 9 for the majority season. Shakeel’s cameo innings of 22 ended, being bowled by the same bowler than had captured the wickets of Peter Joslin and myself. David Behling came in at 5 to join Dan Carver at the crease. Dan did not last long, when he tried to smash a ball through the covers and ended up smashing it in the air and being caught for 10. At 42 for 4, Hertford thought this would be over very soon when Jonathon North came to the crease. This was not so, Jonathon playing some lovely shots including a beautiful off drive for 4 past the bowler. David Behling was playing those normal shots you are use to with him, before Jonathon walked in front of all three and was out for a wonderful 30 with the score on 106 for 5. In came Nasser Rashid at 7. The 20 overs begin with us on 109 for 5, needing an additional 146 to win at just over 7 an over. David Behling took to the slower bowler from one end and Nasser Rashid took to the quicker bowler at the other. After a quick drink for David, and hitting a four, he looked at the scoreboard and saw that he was on 49, and hit an unusual front defensive to bring up his first ever half century. David did not last long, playing one of his renowned shots picked out the fielder in cow, and was caught for 51. Enter Michael ‘Cookie’ Haigh. Nasser Rashid had blasted his way to 24 before Cookie ran an unnecessary single to run Nasser out, leaving us 164 for 7 with 8 overs to go, and Harry Piper coming to the crease. Cookie given his wicket away by skying one to mid off and resultantly being caught for 8. This brought Aaron Hill to the crease. Harry was not fazed by this and hit an immaculate hook shot for 4. Aaron played a few shots to give him a couple of runs but could not stop a rip snort getting him out, being bowled for 2. With 4 overs to go and the 184 for 9, Harry Piper hit a lovely cover drive for 4 and then a single leaving Graham ‘The Bullet’ Carpenter to bat out the remaining four balls, he managed to keep out the first but was not able to keep out the second and was bowled. Chingford were bowled out for 189, losing by 64 runs.

This was another disappointing defeat, but it did have its plusses. David Behling hitting his first ever half century, and hopefully the first of many. Jonathon North, following his superb batting performances last season, this was the first time I have ever seen him bat and he looked superb. Harry Piper, just like his uncle Steve, with a beautiful bowling action allowing the ball to swing with a bit of pace, and playing some lovely strokes.

Next match is the start of the Slazenger Chess Valley League, were we take on Knebworth Park at Forest Side, looking to notch up our win this game and hopefully stay in the ‘Premiership’ for another season as long as availability is good, I would like a very strong side out.
