Chingford Cricket Club Won 7 wickets

Match report When writing the match reports for the website, the scorebook is always close at hand. For this annual fixture, we use a special scorebook and I am able to look through who did what in this fixture in previous seasons. A certain pattern tends to develop. The pattern starts with Mike Blake recruiting a side which on paper would comfortably beat their opponents. Four 1st teamers are in the side to do the batting and turn their arms over later on against the black socks. I have kept wicket in this fixture for the last 3 years. In 2003, I was No 6 and watched Nos 4 and 5 bat to the end. In 2004, I was No 7 and watched Nos 5 and 6 bat to the end. In 2005, I was No 6 and watched Nos 1 and 5 bat to the end. The only break from the pattern this year came when the oppo decided to bat first. How dare they. On a hot sunny day, Chingford bowled for 3 hours 15 minutes and got 45 minutes and 20 overs back. Or atleast would have if the match had gone the distance. In the late August gloom, O'Sullivan and Harris conspired to deny each other a personal target. This was not O'Sullivan's first 100 of the season and it was not Harris's first 50. So there. Harris, denied the opportunity of his 50, rather than pat back the last ball of the over and leave O'Sullivan the chance of reaching 3 figures, smashed the ball to the boundary. I don't think they have spoken to each other since. Harris may well have come to regard a 50 against Old Vics as his traditional right as he managed one in this fixture in 2004. Ben MacGregor may feel that he is better off not playing this fixture as he has managed scores of 17, 21 and 22. Beth on the other hand seems to have established a tradition where she plays this fixture and bowls. She will however not want to retain a tradition where she remains wicketless. The highlight of the day's cricket has to be Tony Barker taking a tumbling catch off his own bowling to dismiss Shaun McMurray. In future, Shaun should try and pick his fielders a little better.
