Match report The A Team faced their toughest encounter yet, playing Newham VI Form B last Saturday. Greg Hales, back from India, came back into the side in place of Richard Alston. Batting first, Chingford got an indifferent start. James Hill, playing his second match of the season, reached the all important 25 retirement target for the second match running. However, Chingford lost wickets at the other end. Macca Meade was out for 6, Greg Hales for 3 and Nick Shawyer for 0. Kerry Marriott joined Ben Macgregor and a recovery was commenced. Marriott was looking good but a misunderstanding between the batsmen left him stranded mid wicket and he left with 15 to his name. Hill retuned in the 11th over and pushed his score on to 34 before being run out by a direct throw. MacGregor, saw out the rest of the last over to finish on 13 not out. Helped by 17 extras, Chingford could still manage only 88-5 off 12 overs.
The bowlers had to be at the top of their game to rescue this match, but Newham's opening pair started well, scoring quickly off Meade (0-29) and Marriott (0-14), and not getting out. Both reached 25 and retired. With new batsmen in, Chingford were able to exert some pressure. Macgregor (2-25) picked up 2 wickets and Shawyer (1-18) one. However, 2 bits of Newham fortune, Hill's throw hitting the stumps without removing a bail and Hales dropped catch, meant that they were never really in danger of losing this contest. Chingford's bowlers did well to concede just 3 byes but lost their unbeaten record by 3 wickets.
