Match report Chingford took on Newham VI form College, the only side to have beaten them last season. Both sides had already lost 2 games this season and defeat for one or the other would signal the end of their title challenge.
Newham A featured their star player of last year, making his first outing of the season (rats!). The deterioration of the yellow balls through the season meant that the sides played with the old seamless red ball. Newham's opening two bowlers swung the ball and Meade and Shawyer were forced to work hard for their runs. However, they succeeded in building a platform. Shawyer made it to the retirement figure which made up for Meade getting out just short. Looking to accelerate the scoring, McMurray and MacGregor perished. Hales, after smiting some useful straight blows also fell. With run scoring now being matched in importance by crease occupation, Chingford could only make their way to 96. At least this was a score that our bowlers could defend.
A good start was required and Meade took a wicket in his first over. Their top order managed to score more freely than ours and succeeded in getting them ahead of the run rate. The stage seemed set for McMurray to put the strangle hold on the middle order in the middle overs. However, he struggled to control the red ball and the match moved further away from Chingford. Up steps Nick Shawyer, playing his first game of the season to bowl Chingford back into the game with 2 wickets. MacGregor managing to take a catch off the wall behind him. Their star player, who had opened the batting and retired on 25 returned at the fall of the 4th wicket. For the last over, he was the only Newham player left standing, but needed less than a run a ball to win. McMurray, looking for the wicket to win the game had 5 attempts before a 3 took Newham to victory.
Chingford next play unbeaten leader Wanstead A on 4th February.
