Match report
Matt O'Sullivan came in for the absent Nick Shawyer to play his second A team match of the season. The opponents, Wanstead have not lost a game and victory today would virtually assure them the division 1 title. Chingford fielded first and had Richard MacGregor sub fielding for the yet again late Mac Meade. Mac appeared 8 overs into their innings and as a consequence Sully had to bowl one over in his absence. Wanstead got off to a good start with both openors reaching 25. Chingford pegged the game back in the middle overs and picked up a few wickets. After 11 overs it looked as though Chingford would be chasing little more than 140 but wides and no balls in Meade's last over prolonged the innings. The fielding highlight (and the only good thing to happen in the field) was Ben MacGregor getting a run out with a direct throw.
Against top class bowling, Sully scored quickly to keep pace with a tough asking rate. His dismissal and that of Shawyer meant that Meade and MacGregor needed to bat with care. A direct throw accounted for MacGregor but Chingford were still up with the asking rate and by now Meade had reached 25. With 3 overs to go, Chingford needed 50 to win. McMurray decided to go for the back wall and failed to find it at all in the 10th over. He had better luck in the next over and managed, in between a series of wides, to put Chingford ahead of the asking rate. Hales had by now perished and Meade was in for the last over which he spent at the non-strikers end. McMurray faced their best bowler, Merv Westfield, needing just 11 to win. The battle went the way of the bowler and Chingford were left 1 run short of a fourth bonus point.
No one has come as close as Chingford to beating the mighty Wantead. Whilst our fielding was nothing special, a performance like this each game would have won us games we ended up losing. Three matches remain, and Chingford are destined to finish mid table.
