Match report On Saturday Chingford played St Aubyn’s, the undefeated Indoor League Champions, in the first round of the end of season cup competition. Only a month previously Chingford had lost heavily in the league to the same side, going down by forty runs. There was genuine concern that history would repeat itself.

St Aubyn’s won the toss and elected to bat first with their opening batsmen soon putting runs on the board. However, in the third over William Armstrong-Fox struck twice bowling two St Aubyn’s batsmen with consecutive balls. Daniel Lawrence added a third wicket in the fifth over, when Ben Gordon made the first of two fine catches reducing St Aubyn’s to thirty for three. Further wickets fell quickly to William, Daniel and Andrew MacGregor and St Aubyn’s were dismissed for just 54 in nine overs.

The Chingford innings got off to a shaky start when Ben Gordon was run out with the total on five. However, Andrew MacGregor, who top scored with seventeen, supported by William Armstrong-Fox steadied the innings by taking the score to thirty one, before William was also run out. Another period of sensible batting by Andrew and Daniel enabled Chingford to reach the St Aubyn’s total in the final over of the innings.

This was an excellent performance against the best team in the league. Strong all round performances from everyone and a mature sensible approach to scoring the runs required for victory. The semi-finals take place on the 29th April when the likely opponents will be Ilford who came second in the league.
