Match report Paul Canham led the side against last season strugglers West Essex who won the toss and put Chingford into bat. After a few overs, Chingford's two in-form batters, Peter Shawyer and Andrew Chipchase were out, Chippy first ball. Against a good opening attack, Joyce and Ross, required to bat like Peters and Fletcher, dug in and put on 51. However, they both contrived to get themselves out to the lesser change bowlers. Peters and Canham needed to accelearate and bat like Joyce and Canham, which they did. Canham signaling a change in the mood of the innings by dispatching his first delivery for four. Chingford were well placed at 101-4 with their sights on a score of 150 plus. However, this was as good as it got as both fell along with the lower order and Chingford were bowled out after 42.3 overs.
After tea, Offord and Chipchase swung the ball and worked their way through the top order. Both bowled well but Offord being described by the Umpire as bowling like Glen McGrath was perhaps slightly over the top in praise. After 20 overs, 6 wickets were down. 5 batters were bowled but it was the nature of the No4s dismissal that was the most notable. Offord was bowling, Peters came up to the stumps and 2 balls later, the No4s edge went low to Canham at 1st slip via the keepers finger tips where he pulled off a diving catch. There was some late order resistance that was broken by a piece of sharp fielding from Piper. Canham mopped up the tail with the ball to secure the Player of the Match accolade. (Captaincy, top scorer, a diving catch and 2 wickets - is PC just another Freddie Flintoff?)
