Match report Finally decent weather enabled the 3s to continue their season in a home fixture against relegated Walthamstow. With a strong side taking the field, PC won the toss and chose to bat in the hope of getting the maximum 20 points. Joyce and Chipchase built a sound platform scoring at a comfortable 3.25 an over. Joyce was just getting into his stride when he was run out. Chipchase called him for a single, Joyce said 'no' twice, but faced with the oncoming Chipchase decided not to say 'no' a third time and in what had looked like a forlorn 'dash' for the other end, nearly made it. Chipchase got into his stride to help accelarate the scoring rate, which overcame the loss of Shawyer. A typical innings from Joslin, featuring 2 sixes put Chingford comfortably in the driving seat at 118-2 off 31.4 overs. With both dismissed along with Canham and Carver, there seemed some cause for alarm at 164-6 off 42 overs. Noori was by now sparkling with the bat and Peters giving good support as well as hitting his own six. The pair got Chingford to nearly 200. Baldock came in to hit 2 fours prior to the declaration after just under 49 overs.
Offord and Baldock swung the new ball a bit but neither opener was able to get a nick on anything outside off-stump. One opener had a good pair of pads to be thankful for as he survived 3 strong appeals for lbw. He was to be the first wicket to fall. Noori replaced Offord and whilst in his follow through, turned to appeal to the umpire for an lbw and twisted his ankle. He left the field for most of the rest of the innings. Canham finished his over and bowled a useful spell that removed the No4, bowled and the remaining opener, stumped. Peters had an earlier stumping effort turned down by the umpire. With the pressure now really on to take wickets, Canham frequently rotated his bowlers; Carver and Thorne tried to tempt the batters out and finally Baldock and Offord came back to try and blast them out.
Walthamstow were thus handed some runs and made enough to secure a batting bonus point which was probably more than they deserved. 44 overs was not enough to bowl them out, but 50 probably would not have been either. All Chingford bowlers bowled well enough, but there was just not enough in the pitch to dislodge determined batting. If we learned anything today, it was that we can not rely on the Peter May wickets to give us conditions to bowl other sides out.
