Match report
Between Tuesday and Friday, the 3rd XI included A Perrin, S Piper and P Shawyer but some late changes meant that Chingford, upon losing the toss, started their innings in what Paul Canham announced to be his last game as captain with a fairly typical 3rd team. Stephen Thorne has offered to take over for the rest of the season.
Joyce got a good one early which he knicked to the keeper. Sharma and Williams looked comfortable but Sharma missed a straight one as he is inclined to do and Chingford were 31-2. A loose shot from Williams not long after started a Chingford collapse that claimed seven wickets in no time. Taylor and Peters knicked good balls to the keeper and Canham fell knicking a wide one to the keeper. Joslin was having something of a 'losing it' day; In getting off the mark he set off for a possible two but lost his bat halfway through the first run. In attempting to ground his hand before turning for a second run, he didn't get it over the line and although he completed the second run lost the first run to a 'one short' call. Soon after, whilst launching into and off side shot he lost his footing and skied the catch. When Offord walked out to join Baldock, Chingford were 50-9 and the opening bowlers were still on. Neither bowler was a great terror but they were putting the ball in the right areas and Chingford just seemed to be having one of those days. Neither Offord or Baldock seemed to be in any trouble and were collecting ones and twos with ease. Their skipper brought himself on to bowl his slow left arm and Baldock launched into him, striking two fours. Then he got one to turn at Offord and the Chingford innings was over.
Captains agreed a 10 minute change over and to take tea after 4.30. This gave Chingford about an hour to bowl at Harlow before tea. Baldock bowled with life but not enough accuracy and was replaced by Thorne. Thorne was getting turn and bounce and at the other end, Offord's outswinger was in charge of the corridor outside the right handers off-stump. At tea, they had removed the first four Harlow bats for 30 runs. Of note was a catch taken by Taylor at 3rd slip, moving towards 2nd slip to give Offord a well deserved first wicket. However, finding the edge was a rareity for Offord today. A rare snick saw Sharma at second slip floor a sharp chance. The situation was bearable because Offord was not going for runs and Thorne was working his way through the batting order. The Harlow No8 came out to try and blast the win. In one over he slogged Thorne for two fours in two balls. The following ball, was slogged in the general direction of Canham who made good ground to take the catch. When Chingford lost their ninth wicket, they had scored 50. when Harlow lost their ninth wicket they had scored 62. Chingford had a 10th wicket partnership but Harlow did not have an eleventh player. On paper this looks like a close contest between two evenly matched sides. In reality, batting, Chingford were good enough to get knicks on the ball whereas Harlow were not. The luck was not with us today and we had to rely on our cricketing skills to earn 20 points.
Three things continue to irritate us, playing at Peter May. The teas: they are far too expensive for what we get and no matter when we turn up are never quite ready. The outfield: continues to be left too long by the groundskeeper. The pitch: for the first time this season, had too much grass left on it. The pitch is probably the least of our concerns; the bounce was true and carry through to the keeper was very good. There was some help for the seamers and the spinners got plenty of purchase, which is better than having a flat batting track. On reflection, we should have scored at least 180 on it.
