Chingford Cricket Club Won 10 wickets

Match report With England's soccer team playing in the World Cup Quarter-Final, second placed Chingford took the field against bottom club Woodford Green with only 10 players. Numerous 3rd team regulars were missing which meant that Coulson and Blake were up from the 4ths. We were strengthened by the return of Shawyer and Chipchase.
Chingford had lost the toss and our 10 were fielding under a hot sun on a Peter May track that had some decent bounce which made it play better than any track we have encountered here yet. Coulson's new ball spell deserved a reward and he would have claimed the first wicket had Canham clung onto a slip catch. Chipchase was called into the attack as much to stem the early run flow as take wickets. He did both, as their best bat cut loosely to Shawyer in the covers. He then yorked the No3 with an inswinger. Blake replaced Coulson and settled into a rythm with his first 5 overs conceding one run. Although Coulson was wicketless he did hold onto two steeplers and could have had a third catch after he made good ground to get a hand to the ball. Blake, with only one wicket to his name and with the arrival of Green's blacksocks, Thorne ruthlessly removed him from the attack to replace him with ..... Thorne. The dogged mid-innings partnership was broken with Thorne's first delivery and from then on there was a steady fall of wickets. There was a bungled piece of Chingford fielding that resulted in a blacksock surviving a run out. Thorne, one of the run out conspirators duly removed the blacksock with a straight one. It hardly seemed to matter that Canham had another slip catch put down and Peters had an appeal for a catch turned down. Thorne, feeling guilty at having removed Blake from the attack, brought him back to bowl at 10 and 11. This act so unsettled Blake that when given the chance to dismiss the No10 he chose to run him out instead.
The Chingford reply was led by Chipchase and Thorne, the latter being persuaded by others (including himself) to be an emergency opener as Peters was complaining of fatigue. Against an old ball and slow bowling, the pair prospered and demonstrated that the pitch was worth 250 rather than the 110 that Green mustered. Thorne took advantage of the batting opportunity to have a decent net while Chipchase just took advantage and completed his 50 off 38 balls. The partnership was noteworthy for containing more 3s than 4s, mainly due to the fact that we were playing on the strip on the end of the table.
