Match report
After losing to 3rd placed Harold Wood last week, we took on 4th placed Walthamstow who were just 6 points behind us. Tom Hayden, Chris Young and Danny Milligan were making their 3rd team league debuts. The match was played on the top pitch at Peter May, their home ground. Andrew Chipchase became the 5th person to skipper the 3s this season and on winning the toss, chose to bowl first, perhaps mindful that we weren't able to bowl out Walthamstow in our earlier season encounter. The atmosphere in this game seemed to have much in common with our earlier meeting. The match started well enough with Richie Coulson clean bowling one opener in his second over. Some indifferent strokes and some tight bowling from Chipchase enabled us to stay in control. Alfie Taylor took a sharp catch at short leg off Chippy which the umpire did not feel was out. They had a good middle order bat who had a good technique and looked like holding together the innings until Chippy bowled him with a 'slower ball' that the bowler later admitted just slipped out. The wicket had a bit in it for the bowler who put the ball in the right areas, which Chippy did. Mike Blake replaced Coulson after his 6 overs and settled in to the sort of line and length that we wanted. These two went through the middle order to leave Walthamstow 100-8. The ninth wicket pair then put together the biggest partnership of the innings and with the 52nd over approaching, we found ourselves on the defensive for the first time in the innings. Taylor replaced a tired Blake and Coulson a tired Chipchase, to bowl the last eight overs between them. Taylor dropped on to a decent line and length and induced a stumping chance for Peters which the umpire gave as not out. An unsavoury period of a few minutes thus followed in which cricket didn't actually take place. When play resumed, Taylor achieved something that we did not expect from him when he got the breakthrough wicket with an LBW. Coulson was given the difficult job of trying to contain their No10 who was a useful bat and was their top scorer. Coulson bowled the 52nd over and beat the No10 four times, the last occassion being the last ball of the over with Peters claiming a stumping that the umpire gave as not out. This was a pretty good fielding display in which the fielders held their catches and the only missed chance was a very difficult running catch for Taylor.
With Chipchase and Peters feeling tired, Nasser Rashid was promoted to open the innings with Roy Williams. Without needing to score quickly, these two nevertheless scored at 3-4 runs an over, first against the old ball and then against the new. Williams moved swiftly to 48 at which point he had long spells at the non-stikers end. The pair brought up the hundred and just when Rashid was in sight of his 50, he slapped one to extra cover. The opening stand was worth 107 and had all but won the match for Chingford. Williams completed his 50 but was out next ball caught at slip. Taylor and Chipchase were together when the last 20 overs had just commenced, needing to score at no more than 2 an over to win. They made batting look easy and Chingford won with about 10 overs to spare.
Against a weaker Walthamstow than expected, this was still an important win that strengthens our 2nd place position. Next week we entertain leaders Chelmsford.
