Westcliff on sea v Chingford Cricket Club Sat 3rd on Sat 09 Sep 2006 at 12.30
Chingford Cricket Club Won 85 runs

Match report The final match of the league season took us to mid table Westcliff. Although we had dropped to 4th place after last week's loss, there was still a chance of promotion as long as we won. Paul Canham returned to captain the side. We won the toss and batted. Joyce and Williams got us off to a good start on a pitch where the ball came off the wicket a bit slowly. Joyce tried to work a ball to leg and got a top edge and was caught. He was perhaps the only one of us to get out to the slowness of the pitch. His innings of 31 was to be the highest score on either side. Noori got a good ball from their spinner's first delivery. Everyone else seemed to get out to poor shots. With so many batters getting in, it was a shame that none went on to get a decent score. Anthony Peek hit the only six of the innings and could have gone further had he tried to keep hold of the strike. To be bowled out for 199, 1 run short of collecting 2 more bonus points was of less concern than normal as we were only interested in winning the game. The consensus was that Westcliff would have to bat very well to get 200 and we took tea with confidence.
Blake took the new ball during the first over, which proved to be of the liking of one of their opening batsmen, who dispatched Blake for 6 fours in 3 overs. At the other end, Baldock had to contend with a quieter batsman and as a result his figures were not so damaged. Blake was replaced by Jabbari, who with his second delivery induced an edge from the four hitting opener, which Peters gratefully accepted. Baldock struck next, bowling the other opener with easily his best delivery. From then onwards, it was the Jabbari Show, as his inswingers snared two players lbw and another two mistimed shots which we clung onto. Baldock, threatened with replacement, now came into his own again, getting three players caught. The last one of these was a well judged running catch from Blake down at fine leg. With just one needed for his fivefor, Baldock, now with Thorne bowling at the other end, found the No11s edge and Peters held his third catch. Baldock and Jabbari both collected their first ever 3rd team fivefor. Thus ended the league season with a 20 point win.
Third placed Harold Wood went down to defeat at Harlow. However, second placed West Essex chased down bottom club Billericay's score to give them the win that secured their promotion. This means that we finished third, just missing out on promotion. One way of summing up the season would be how West Essex and ourselves faired at bottom club Billericay. They won their match in blazing sunshine, whilst our match was abandoned due to rain.
