Match report It is a lot easier to write a match report when you win. This defeat hurt, mostly because we were playing a side we should have beaten. It is easy to point to the usual reasons for a defeat; missed chances, bad luck, wreckless batting, poor availability but West Essex deserved the win for chasing down what we all thought was an impressive total.
We knew the day would be a hard one when Thorny lost the toss and we were asked to bat on a pitch with variable bounce. With only one wicket down, we seemed to be building a sound platform but then Peters and Patel got out. Truptesh being bowled by a ball that shot along the ground to hit the bottom of middle. North and Peek batted patiently and once we had re-established some sort of position, accelerated the scoring. Wickets seemed to fall at the wrong moment but then most of the lower order scored quickly as we reached the end of the 52nd over.
We knew that to win the game we needed to bowl straight. Anything wide was always going to be easy runs on a small ground with a fast outfield. We needed an early wicket or two to build the pressure. By the time we got our first wicket, West Essex had already built their platform and were scoring quicker than they needed to win. Blake and Thorne were never able to exert the pressure that we were desperate to build on. The wickets we took came too late in the proceedings.
