Match report Gidea Park & Romford replaced Southgate as our opponents for this friendly 40 overs match where Greg Hales won the toss and chose to bat first. Chingford did not start well, apart from Taylor crashing 3 fours in 3 balls. After 10 overs we were 36-3 with Whitfield and MacGregor fresh to the crease. After a slow start, Whitfield broke loose hitting 3 fours in 3 balls. His 50 came in 48 balls and his hundred came off 84 balls and included 12 fours and a six. Throughout, MacGregor gave good support and helped him put on 174 for the fourth wicket in 26 overs. MacGregor's 50 came off 65 balls and with the help of Nick Shawyer, he ensured that a challenging total was set.
David Power took the new ball for Chingford and in his second over dismissed the batter who had smashed him for a six in his first over. He took an athletic catch off his own bowling, to leave Gidea 20-1. Shawyer, towards the end of his spell picked up 2 wickets, to leave them 61-3 off 13 overs, in a similar position to Chingford. The 4th wicket pair started to re-build the innings against the off-spinners Thorne and Peek. At 105 Peek induced a batting error and then again 15 runs later to leave them 120-5. MacGregor came on and runs were harder to come by. Peek picked up his 3rd wicket as yet another Gidea bat skied a catch to the outfield. Their No 3 who had shown more patience than his colleagues, reached his 50 but decided to take on MacGregor and another catch was held in the deep to leave them 145-7. 85 were thus required off 10 overs with their numbers 8 and 9 new to the crease. With 55 needed off the last 5 overs and now only two wickets in hand, Hales offered first overs to Baldock and Taylor. He re-called MacGregor when 30 were needed off 3 overs and 5 balls later they were all out. In the tradition of all good friendly matches, Chingford's players retired to the bar to dring with the spectators.
