Wanstead v Chingford Cricket Club Sun B on Sun 02 Jul 2006 at 2:00
Chingford Cricket Club Won 54 runs

Match report The A team were playing in the National Cup competition with good availability and the B team got a few rejects (Rhone, Shawyer) as a result. Whitfield was making a first return to the club which had developed him as a colt keen to impress his old clubmates. In a match limited to 40 overs a side, Chingford got first use of a batting track with decent bounce. The Chingford openers knicked deliveries to keeper and slip. Shawyer, after a typically scratchy start, settled in and despatched one bowler for four fours in as many balls. As he approached his 50, Ross started to accelerate his own score against the slow bowlers. Both reached their 50s but Ross, in an attempt to up the anti, got out to an ugly hoik. Joslin, watched by a throng of family supporters came to the wicket to face his younger brother. He started well, dispatching him for 4 but after being wrapped on the gloves, decided that he prefered not to get out to him rather than score any more runs. Chingford's last 10 overs yielded the fewest runs as Shawyer searched for his 100. Having got there, he tried a reverse sweep and edged to the keeper. Chingford's innings closed with about 40 runs less than we should have scored.
After tea, Wanstead started their reply positively with the younger Joslin demonstrating which brother had the batting talent. Shawyer though reminded his team mates that he had bowling talent and got Joslin to knick an outswinger to Rhone who held the catch at slip. (Yes it was a good catch but he missed a boundary catch later in the innings) Shawyer followed this up with a catch to the keeper and a catch off his own full toss. Wanstead continued to score freely and were ahead of the asking rate. Chingford needed to take wickets to ensure victory and were confronted with a stubborn mid order stand in which the remaining opener and the No5 both scored 50s. Blake bowled a lot better than his figures indicate. Blake also did well to resist pressure from Ross, Rhone and Whitfield who all fancied a bowl. The key turning point was Thorne's second wicket, caught by a diving Whitfield at mid wicket to dismiss the opener. It was Rashid's second spell that brought the innings to a swift conclusion. (Caught long on, stumped and caught at square leg) The final catch was held by Ross who had dropped an absolute sitter the over before.
An excellent friendly fixture played against a top club at a decent facility. If more Essex League clubs could field two Sunday sides then we could get more fixtures like this.
