Wanstead v Chingford Cricket Club Under 11 XI on Sun 04 Jun 2006 at 9.30
Chingford Cricket Club Won 104 runs

Match report The match against Wanstead was played in the Terrier format. For those unfamiliar with this form of the game each side has twelve players, batsmen are paired and each pair bats for four overs. At the end of the four overs the next pair take over and so on. Each time a wicket is taken by the bowling side eight runs are deducted from the batting side’s score.

Scoring matches of this type can be an interesting experience with the score starting at 200 to allow a measure of safety for those teams who lose a lot of wickets!

Captain for the day was William Armstrong-Fox with vice-Captain Daniel Lawrence. Chingford won the toss and batted first.

William Russell (13) and Daniel Lawrence (19) opened for Chingford and they were soon amongst the runs, putting on close to forty runs during their allotted four overs, in what was an outstanding start to the Chingford innings. Both scored a number of boundaries, including one audacious four by Daniel, which can only be described as a high loft over the left shoulder down to the fine leg boundary.

The high run rate continued through the remainder of the Chingford innings with good contributions from Ben Gordon (12), Tom Goodland (10) and A.Another (24 - Daniel Lawrence batting twice to make up the twelfth player as Chingford could only muster eleven). At the end of the Chingford innings they had amassed 310-6.

At the start of the Wanstead innings tight bowling from William Armstrong-Fox put the opposition under pressure before William Russell struck with three wickets in five balls. There followed a number of excellent bowling performances from Alfie Leachman (8-2), Harry Turnpenny (6-3) and Harry Holdsworth (10-2). At the end of the Wanstead innings they reached 206.

This was an excellent performance that showed strength in all departments, especially fielding where the team kept a tight grip on the game. It is clear that the hard work put in during the winter nets is paying off. It was particularly encouraging to see the emergence of players such as Andrew Kelly, Jack Rhodes and Frankie Lane, all of whom contributed to the success of the team. Finally, a special mention for Ben Gordon who kept wicket to a very high standard, as well as scoring 12 runs and taking a wicket when he bowled.
