Match report Graem Peters led the Cs to Noak Hil, to play a conference friendly. Fieldng first, Adam Campbell struck first, bowling one of the openers. Martin Steel was having his first real bowling spell for 5 years and deserved a wicket. On a pitch that helped the seamers, David Behling tried a couple of overs of medium pace before coming back on later to take 2 wickets with off-spin. Noak Hill had one class bat who came in at No4 and messed up our change bowlers economy ratings, Will Rapley doing well to escape punishment. Tony Peek kept well on a difficult pitch before handing the gloves over to Tom Hayden for the last third, with the latter holding a difficult chance late on. A generous declaration followed a late innings dash that posted a score over 250 on a variable pitch with inconsistant bounce. The outfield was fast and the ground not too large which helped the batters in return.
Hayden went early pushing too hard at one that stopped. A comfortable looking Truptesh Patel helped the young middle order pair of Edmunds and Rapley keep the scoreboard ticking over. Patel was replaced by Peters and Rapley by Steel and these two got on top of the bowling. With the prospect of a win seemingly out of reach, Peters retired to unleash Behling and the lower order on an unsuspecting Noak Hill. A quickfire innings from Peek helped Steel bring the target within reach of Chingford and 40 were needed off the last 3 overs. However, both batters perished in the chase and the returning Peters saw out the draw with the reliable Campbell.
It is hard to imagine a friendly Sunday cricket match working out as well as this. A young Chingford side did themselves justice and got some good game time under their belts. Chingford are grateful to Noak Hill for being excellent hosts and for playing the match in excellent spirits.
