Match report With the A team just below half way in the league, a win against fellow strugglers Loughton A was important to avoid falling into the relegation battle. Greg Hales returned to boulster the side and William Rhone was called in to keep while Paul shawyer is abroad. Marc Fletcher was dropped for Alfie Taylor to strengthen the batting. Matt O'Sullivan, fresh from his excellent batting in the Chingford Challenge was cleaned up early on. However Hales, fresh from his 70 odd at Waltham Abbey, was already getting stuck into the bowling. Rob Whitfield joined him and together these two scored at a healthy rate. Starving his partner of the strike, Whitfield was able to retire first. Even though Ben MacGregor missed a straight one, Chingford were well placed with Taylor and Rhone fresh at the crease. Rhone, having got a nice little 4 not out earlier in the day and with no pressure on him produced his first 25 at Peter May (ever/for some time?) with some fine hitting. When Taylor became the 4th Chingford player to reach 25, he enabled Whitfield and Hales to continue their partnership. Into the last over with wickets in hand, Hales reached his 50 and retired for the second time. His innings included 5 sixes. Rhone returned to the crease, in itself an unlikely event for a No6 to return to the crease. He perished along with Whitfiled, run out in the last over.
Loughton needed a flier to challenge our total, and got one against the bowling of Hales and Whitfield. MacGregor punctured their progress with a wicket but they still managed to keep up with the asking rate. It was Taylor who stopped put the breaks on and took wickets into the bargain. With Loughton needing to score more than 3 runs a ball, the field was set to protect the boundary curtain. As a result, MacGregor conceded more than his bowling deserved.
Taylor concluded an excellent mornings cricket. In both games he scored 50 runs without being dismissed, he held 2 catches, took 5 wickets and went for just 40 runs in 6 overs.
