Chingford Cricket Club Indoor Sat A v Hainault & Clayhall A on Sat 13 Jan 2007 at 8.45
Chingford Cricket Club Lost 6 runs

Match report The same Chingford side took the field who played the previous match against Hainault & Clayhall A. This side was promoted from Division 2 last season and had been supplimented by players from Frenford who have folded following their relegation from division 1.
Whitfield opened the bowling with his usual mixture of wides and dot balls. Without the wides, his figures would have looked tidy. Fortunately this didn't matter much as MacGregor and Hales were bowling very tightly. Tight bowling brings pressure and Chingford were rewarded with a total of four run outs, 2 from direct throws with MacGregor's long distance effort being the best. Taylor continued his excellent form by getting an lbw with his first ball.
Hainault's first two bowlers, whilst not being that fast, were quick enough to bowl to a short pitched strategy. O'Sullivan was spared the short stuff when he was bowled by a good length ball, his second duck in as many weeks. Chingford's approach to dealing with the short stuff by trying to hook was not the best strategy. It was a shot that brought the downfall of both Whitfield and Rhone, caught off the ceiling and wall. Hales, who had looked like falling in a similar manner, managed to get caught at third man off two walls. Taylor played a seemingly safe flick off his legs only to see the square leg hold onto the catch as it came back off the wall.
Even at Peter May with a red ball, batters need to play differently from how they do outdoors. This batting side has played enough cricket in this hall to appreciate that. The most experienced indoor batter in the side, Ben MacGregor, was the only one to play the right innings in the right conditions. He has lacked runs this season and dropped himself down to No6 and found himself last man standing with 50 runs needed. He never looked like getting out and he scored comfortably ahead of the asking rate. With 2 overs to go, we needed just 8 runs to win. At this point, he and his running partner, Rhone, found themselves at the same end. A total mix up when there was no pressure on the pair had enabled us to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. It was hard on MacGregor, who had deserved the win, even if the overall performance of the team had not merited it.
