Chingford Cricket Club Indoor U15 A v South Woodford A on Fri 25 Jan 2008 at 6:00pm
Chingford Cricket Club Lost 5 wickets
Match report
After suffering their first defeat of the indoor season at the hands of Wanstead earlier this month, the Chingford under 15 colts team lost the chance of returning to winning ways against a very skilful South Woodford side who held the upper hand for most of this contest. For the second game running, Chingford equipped themselves very well, but came up against inspired opponents on the night.
Having been asked to bat first, the South Woodford bowlers made life very difficult for the Chingford opening batsmen, Beth MacGregor and James Hallsworth, as their array of spin-bowlers kept to a tidy length, making `boundaries’ a rarity in the early stages. Unfortunately for James, he was confused by the flight of a delivery by one of South Woodford’s spinners and was bowled, just when it was looking like he might be finding his range.
Aidan Woodcock was able to pinch a number of sweetly timed singles, urged on by Beth who was now getting used to the bowlers’ nagging accuracy, and both players began to exploit any gaps in the field. Unluckily for him, Aidan was caught behind by the wicket-keeper, who was standing up close to the stumps. Beth had to use all of her experience as she initially retired not out on 25 runs, although Chingford were in a very precarious position at 40 for two wickets from seven overs.
Rizwan Rehman settled himself at the crease and hit what seemed to be a cleanly hit boundary until the South Woodford fielder held the catch at mid-off. A great catch it has to be said, but one of those ones that either `stick’ or fall to the floor.
Alex Gordon looked very comfortable against the spinners and moved athletically between the wickets to earn singles when they never looked on at times. As his confidence grew, he managed to hit a six to help accelerate the score along. Unfortunately for Nihal Noori, he was unable to trouble the scorers as he was bowled out before he could get into his stride.
With Beth returning to the fold, she was able to help Alex move the Chingford total to a respectable 95 for four wickets at the close, a score-line which did not look feasible at the mid-point of the innings. Beth finished with a superb and chanceless 57 not out (including three sixes), ably supported by Alex with 22 not out.
South Woodford set their stall out to take a `no risk’ approach against the Chingford bowlers, working on the theory that if they batted out the full twelve overs and kept their wickets intact they would eventually be in striking distance of the Chingford total.
Chingford did not do a lot wrong in the field, as their four bowlers, Alex, Aidan, Beth and Nihal bowled with variation, expertise and verve, making the batsmen work extremely hard for their runs, ensuring that nothing was given away cheaply.
South Woodford were able to retire two batsmen as the Chingford total moved ever closer and, ultimately, achieved their run-chase with one over to spare at stumps. An excellent run-out by Beth, however, made sure that the batsmen did not have it all their own way.
With two matches to spare, all is not lost for Chingford as they still have Fives & Heronians (who are currently top of this league) to play in February and then Old Parkonians in March. The title would seem to be out of reach now for Chingford, but it is important that they get back to winning ways as quickly as possible and finish the season on a positive note.
