Chingford Cricket Club Indoor U15 A v Old Parkonians A on Fri 07 Mar 2008 at 9:00pm
Chingford Cricket Club Lost by two wickets

Match report The Chingford under 15 team finished their indoor season on a disappointing note, losing to Old Parkonians in the final over of a tense and closely fought encounter. Having started their premier league campaign so brightly, the under 15’s have fallen away somewhat since the Christmas break, although their mid-table finish provides much optimism for the summer season ahead.

Put into bat first, Beth MacGregor and James Hallsworth made steady progress against the Old P’s pace attack, pinching a number of quick singles, and they seemed to have established a solid base for a later onslaught. After both batsmen settled in, Beth was happy to anchor the innings, which gave James the freedom to launch into his drives, most noticeably two enormous sixes in his initial 28 runs not out. James had earlier escaped an incredible run out chance as an Old P’s fielder missed his direct throw at the stumps from all of 18 inches, when he was left stranded in
`no-man’s land’ half-way down the wicket!

Aidan Woodcock provided good support to Beth, handily aided by a flurry of wide balls from the bowlers, and at the half-way point, Chingford were well set at 50 for one wicket. However, Beth was caught behind off a wicked `lifting’ delivery’ for
A stubborn 13 runs, swiftly followed to the `pavilion’ by Alex Gordon who was beautifully caught out off of a low drive behind square on the leg-side.

Oliver Carroll, making his indoor debut, `nudged and nicked’ a few useful singles in his total of six runs. Aidan, now looking to accelerate the innings, was caught behind for seven runs, which brought Nihal Noori to the crease. He was thrilled to score
12 runs, made up entirely of two `maximum’ sixes which easily cleared the bowler’s head as he followed through.

Oliver was then run out, as was James on his immediate return to the fold, and although Chingford’s total of 104 all out was very respectable, the team were left to wonder what might have been.

Old P’s suffered a nervy opening response as Alex and Aidan kept the bowling on a tight rein. Beth’s swinging deliveries and Nihal’s `steady’ approach seemed to be paying dividends as Alex’s catch behind square on the leg side left Old P’s on 36 for one wicket from five overs. However, the middle order batsmen then took a `slogging’ approach, chancing their arm, and the score very quickly became 78 from nine overs.

A run out left Old P’s needing fourteen runs from the final two overs and, with the pressure mounting, Alex took the fourth wicket of the innings to fall. However, it was all a little too late for the Chingford bowlers as Old P’s reached their target with three balls to spare.

Chingford will be consoled by the fact that they performed well in all seven matches this year, which means that their confidence will not have been dented from their losses during the second half of the winter season.

After this match, team manager, Frank Gordon, presented James Hallsworth with the `Player of the Season’ award, for his `no nonsense’ batting displays at the beginning of Chingford’s innings, and Beth MacGregor with the `Performance of the Season’ award for her 57 not out against South Woodford.
