Chingford Cricket Club Indoor U15 A v Fives & Heronians on Fri 17 Oct 2008 at 9:00
Chingford Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets

Match report CHINGFORD opened up their indoor winter league campaign with a pulsating final over win against the highly fancied Fives and Heronians team. The Forest-siders produced surely their best all-round team performance for some time at under 15 level as they took the fight to a Fives outfit who, quite rightly, are widely favoured to lift this division one title.

Electing to bat first on a fast and bouncy track, the raw pace of Zeeshan Rehman had the Fives’ openers hopping onto the back-foot as he demonstrated the extra penetration that has been added to his bowling armoury this past year. Zeeshan’s second over produced an `unplayable’ delivery to remove the middle stump of one of the Fives’ numerous `dangermen`. Chris Sear, in tandem with Zeeshan, continued his richly promising form of the summer and his perseverance paid dividends with a second early wicket for Chingford.

Just when Fives managed to get a foothold into this match and began to score more freely, Chingford’s consistent and reliable pairing of William Armstrong-Fox and Alex Gordon entered the fold to put the brakes on the run-rate, which caused obvious anxiety amongst Fives’ middle order. Alex bowled a `corker’ to take Fives’ third wicket of the innings in his miserly spell, using late swing to expose the batsman’s middle stump. William’s nagging accuracy piled further pressure on Fives, turning the screw further, complementing Billy Martin’s left-arm in-swingers which were proving most difficult to deal with.

Two more batsmen departed, thanks to two great pieces of athleticism in the field to force run-outs, and the heat was really on as Fives looked to force the pace. Nihal Noori had the difficult task of attempting to contain the last push for runs and, although there was a further run-out, Fives managed to set Chingford the challenging, if not daunting, target of 102 for victory. This was largely due to a stubborn and aggressive 51 not out by one of Fives’ key batsmen.

In response, Zeeshan set about the Fives’ attack extremely positively, making his intentions clear from the first ball. However, he was unable to trouble the scorers too greatly as he was bowled cheaply, while looking well set, followed into the `club-house’ by Alex who was unlucky to be run out whilst seeking a quick single.

Nihal anchored the innings, while punishing anything short, and Billy proved to be a capable foil as he very noticeably grew in confidence. At the half way stage, Chingford were in with a shout of victory against a Fives team possessing a formidable and intimidating pace attack.

After Billy departed, having batted courageously against the Fives onslaught, William came to the crease and produced a quick-fire, bright and breezy, and ultimately priceless 21 runs not out, to add to Nihal’s unbeaten and chanceless 31; Nihal having re-entered the fray after his earlier retirement, once Chris had left the action caught at cover point.

William and Nihal kept their nerve most maturely to reel off the required 17 runs from the first five balls of the final over to record a famous victory over their rivals. With one ball to spare, surely this excellent result was never in doubt!!

Chingford look forward with justifiable optimism to facing Old Parkonians on the
7th November.
