Chingford Cricket Club Indoor U15 A v Old Parkonians A on Fri 07 Nov 2008 at 7:00
Chingford Cricket Club Lost by 1 wicket
Match report
After the heroics of their first game win over Fives, Chingford quite literally let first place in the indoor winter league slip through their hands as three dropped catches were responsible for the Forest-siders’ frustrating defeat against Old Parkonians.
Having been put into bat first, Chingford’s openers Zeeshan Rehman and Beth MacGregor got the innings off to a flying start, clubbing the Old Parks’ seam bowlers for twelve runs an over during the initial exchanges, before Zeeshan was surprisingly stumped off of a no-ball.
Beth anchored the innings well, seeking clever singles at every opportunity, whilst Nihal Noori, obviously confident after his fine innings against Fives, looked to hit `boundary’ balls from anything bowled short. These two batsmen ensured that Chingford were well set for a formidable total at the half-way point, as the total soared to sixty before Beth was caught for 23, and then Nihal retired from the crease having bludgeoned his way to an unbeaten 25.
Chingford’s two middle-order batsmen Alex Gordon and William Armstrong-Fox kept the momentum going at a brisk enough pace and their shot selections against the Parks’ spinners was a feature of their innings, as they showed that a subtle approach can quite often pay dividends in the indoor version of this game. Alex remained unbeaten at the close, scoring 17 valuable runs, as did William for his sensible nine runs. On balance, Chingford’s 109 for two wickets was certainly competitive and should, ultimately, have been enough to secure victory.
Parks took a positive approach in their reply as they held their nerve against the hostile early pace attack of Chris Sear and Zeeshan. Both bowlers finished their spells with two very economical overs, Chris having removed their dangerous-looking opener with a superb full-toss in-swinger. At this stage, Parks still had plenty of work to do at 30 for one wicket off of four overs.
William’s swing bowling reduced Parks to taking quick singles only in their chase for runs. The stubborn remaining opening batsman was still causing a problem, though, and Chingford were pleased to see him retire for 25 runs, having survived a takeable catching opportunity.
A further wicket from Alex lifted Chingford’s hopes of a win, and when Chris threw the ball in quickly to Alex, who gathered sweetly to demolish the stumps to force a run out, it seemed that they were on their way to their second consecutive win this winter.
Nihal was introduced to the Chingford attack as their fifth bowler and, although proving a little expensive, he did manage to mop up two further wickets. However, this only brought Parks’ retired batsman back to the fold, who was ruthless with any delivery not pitched up. The two key moments of this match then occurred when Chingford dropped two relatively straight-forward catches as the Parks’ main batsman rode his luck in pursuit of an unlikely win for his club. There were also two further run-out opportunities that could have been taken on another day.
All credit to the mainstay of the Park innings, though, as he played Beth’s spin bowling very well, easing to 61 runs not out within the Parks’ winning total of 110 for 5 wickets from 10.3 overs. The Chingford players were left scratching their heads wondering how they let this game drift away in such disappointing circumstances.
Chingford take on Wanstead in their next match and will look to bounce back to winning ways. Anything is possible in a twelve-over indoor match and, if Chingford get their strategy right, they are more than capable of notching up another victory.
