Chingford Cricket Club Indoor U15 A v Bancroft's on Fri 23 Jan 2009 at 6:00
Chingford Cricket Club Lost by 20 runs

Match report Chingford slipped to another disappointing indoor winter league defeat, this time at the hands of a rejuvenated Bancroft School team, and they now enter their last two matches with a record of two wins from five games.

Chingford would have fancied their chances of a much-needed win against their hosts, although they were always going to have their work cut out against a well-drilled outfit that are coached by former Essex stalwart John Lever.

Bowling first in this match, Zeeshan Rehman and Chris Sear managed to contain the Bancroft openers impressively during the initial four overs, limiting the opposition to swiftly taken singles. This pattern continued when Alex Gordon entered the fold and at the half-way point, with the pressure building, Chingford were handily placed to limit the Bancroft batsmen to a total of around seventy runs, which would have been well within their compass.

However, to give Bancroft their due, their batsmen `chanced their arms’ somewhat, accelerating the score at every opportunity, and although William Armstrong-Fox and Nihal Noori bowled very competently, they were unable to prevent a couple of sixes and fours being scored. Nihal took one of the two wickets to fall, along with Beth McGregor, although it became very difficult as Bancrofts took the game away from Chingford in the closing stages.

Chasing 106 to win, Zeeshan and Beth managed to `middle’ a number of challenging deliveries from the Bancroft seam-bowlers and they very quickly rattled up twenty-five runs between them whilst looking untroubled. Unfortunately, it was not to last as Zeeshan was out to an excellent caught-and-bowled opportunity. Beth stuck doggedly to her task in scoring 21 runs before her own demise, having been joined by Alex who played confidently in notching up 24 runs of his own. A running mix-up between William and Alex truncated the latter’s innings when he looked well set for a bigger score. Chingford’s `calling’ is something that needs to be improved prior to this summer’s programme of matches.

Nihal then fell without scoring and there was further disappointment for the Forest-siders as William departed to another caught and bowled chance. All that remained was some late `fireworks’ from Chris as he bludgeoned his way to 16 runs before being caught. Chingford were left reflecting on what might have been as they were all out for 85 runs at the close of play.

Chingford will be looking to get back to winning ways in their penultimate fixture, against Ilford, on the 13th February. The team has the talent to win their last two matches.
