Chingford Cricket Club Indoor U15 A v Ilford on Fri 13 Feb 2009 at 7:00
Chingford Cricket Club Won by 13 runs

Match report Chingford returned to winning ways with a closely fought 13-run victory of Ilford in their penultimate fixture of the indoor league season.

After losing the toss yet again, Chingford were asked to bat first and the early stages proved to be extremely tense as Ilford’s spinners limited openers Beth MacGregor and Chris Sear to sharply-taken singles. It became difficult for to get any real momentum going as Ilford stuck doggedly to their game plan of frustrating the two batsmen.

Seeking to accelerate the run-rate, both Beth and Chris fell to smart catches by the end of the fourth over. Alex Gordon adapted to the two awkward seam bowlers who were by now in tandem, managing a straight-drive `six’ in his unbeaten 25 runs. Nihal Noori batted competently with Alex for his 19 runs before being run out. Their partnership helped rebuild the innings of the Forest-siders with the score now having an air of respectability about it. William Armstrong-Fox and Andrew MacGregor entered the fold and produced what turned out to be priceless, match-winning runs as they finished unbeaten at the close.

Set 87 runs to win, Ilford were on course to reach their target after the opening exchanges as they moved steadily along at the required seven runs per over.

Chingford’s two opening bowlers, Alex and Nihal, bowled consistently and intelligently well with the latter removing the dangerous Ilford opener just when he looked well set for a sizeable personal total. William and Andrew also impressed to put the brakes on the batsmen to increase the pressure at a crucial time. Chris and Beth both bowled sensibly and economically, taking two excellent wickets each at the end of the innings to, ultimately, win this match for Chingford by the 11th over. Ilford had the overs/balls in hand to force a win in this game before losing all of their wickets for only 73 runs.

Chingford’s fielding was top-drawer throughout this encounter, as demonstrated by a couple of superb late catches from Chris and Nihal. Players keeping their nerve late on in these matches is vital in this form of quick cricket.

Chingford move onto their final fixture of their winter campaign, against Wanstead B, where a victory would mean them finishing the season with a return of four wins from seven outings. This would be no mean feat in the top division and would represent a `job well done’ if they are able to round things off with another win.
