Shenfield v Chingford Cricket Club Sat 2nd on Sat 16 Jul 2005 at 1330
Chingford Cricket Club Won 65 Runs
Match report
Chingford won the toss and elected to bat on a quick scoring ground (to the great relief of Darren Ross who had fielded first in every game of cricket he had played so far this year!). A steady start which saw Chingford poised at 57 for 2 was followed by a good partnership between Rob Runciman and Darren Ross which accelerated the scoring rate and took the score to 120 before Rob was out for 33. In came Richard Alston, who had missed the last seven weeks with injury. After facing just 68 balls he had a century scored in typical style. Combining first with Darren Ross, who scored an excellent 66, and then Mike Lyon, Richard was fifth out when the score had reached 289. Four runs later the captain declared in the fifty-first over.
In reply Shenfield lost a couple of early wickets to Andy Perrin but then a partnership of approaching 100 between Martin Allen and Peter Rider put the home side in with a chance of winning before the former was bowled by Steve Thorne. Going into the last 20 overs Shenfield needed 138 to win with 7 wickets remaining - an achievable task on the good wicket and fast outfield and with Pete Rider in top form and set. Two wickets from Richard MacGregor set up the introduction of Sanjay Sharma who picked up three wickets (including the key one of Rider for 90 to a good catch by Peter Joslin). A direct hit run-out from Darren Ross left Richard MacGregor to wrap up the match off the first ball of the 15th over of the last 20. An excellent performance after the below par effort of the previous week.
