Chingford Cricket Club Sat 3rd v Saffron Walden on Sat 11 Jun 2005 at 1330
Chingford Cricket Club Won 1 wicket

Match report The skipper was as ever a useless tosser, but again got lucky, as Chingford were asked to bowl first on an interesting looking track. Saffron were obviously looking for maximum points.

Chingford started brightly, with Nadir Noori taking early wickets. Offord bowled a good line and length with pace and beat the bat repeatedly as his 5 maidens testify. Cries of "unlucky Rich" echoed around the ground - a familiar sound now to any regular 3rd team player. His luck did change eventually and he took two very well-deserved wickets. Paul Hart bowled extremely neatly from the same end, using his years of experience to make the ball dance on an unpredicatable surface, which contributed to economical bowling figures. Chippie came on to replace Nadir after his 6 overs and was bowling well until an old groin injury flared up, rendering him unfit to continue. Cookie unfortunately didn't perform and took some stick as a result of bowling too many bad balls (and a long stint at Chans the night before!). Nadir came back on to continue where he left off and wrapped up Saffron's innings with a further 2 wickets. The opposition had scored a modest 134 after facing just shy of 40 overs and admittedly the skipper was feeling quietly confident of a comfortable win.....

......But this is cricket after all! Fletcher and Carver opened the batting and both struggled against two useful opening bowlers, who used the pitch to their advantage. Fletcher was dismissed for 5, ending his purple patch and Carver followed soon after for ten, still to make a real impression with the bat this season. Joslin looked rusty early on, but then began playing with his customary arrogant flair which suggested that we could be in for one of his entertaining innings. Unfortunately, the fun was short-lived when he was bowled by an innocous looking delivery. John, Paul and (Ringo!) David fell cheaply, but Nadir steadied the ship with a calm 34, which left the fallen big guns back on the bench wondering where they had gone wrong. After Cookie's short-lived innings, Chippie strode to the crease (as best he could with a groin injury) with Paul Canham as his runner, resplendent in matching tank-tops. Chippie kept his head, whilst all about him lost theirs, becoming "man" of the moment by reining in a game that was running away from us. Deservedly, he hit the winning runs.

Although we made hard work of this game, we learned that we have the ability to bowl sides out and we have the determination to pull through when things don't go our way. All in all a good game of cricket and a very satisfying victory.
