Match report Lowly Westcliff came to visit us and hoping to muster as many bonus points as possible chose to bat first. This probably suited us even though the batting line-up was not as strong as usual with James Runciman playing in the 1sts. Steve Piper bowled a lot better than his figures suggest and unbelievably, Westcliff's opening pair put on more than 70 for the first wicket. Richard Offord, called up from the 3rds during the week, relieved Mike Lyon and some loose shots from Westcliff batters rewarded him with three wickets, all caught in the ring. With MacGregor tying down one end, Offord ripped through the lower order, clean bowling three more batters to finish with his first 5for for the 2nds. The second most significant thing to happen during the innings was Darren Ross bending over to pick up the ball; it was an act that his left knee violently disapproved of to the extent that he spent the rest of the day trying to calm his knee's temper down with a bag of ice. (The knee requires keyhole surgery and Ross will alas be out for the rest of the season)
With such a low total to get, Chingford never seemed in trouble, despite losing both openeors. Peter Shawyer continued the success elevated 3rd team players were having today, by playing a controlled innings that did all but steer Chingford to victory. This was a more significant innings than it perhaps should have been as Chingford lost 3 more wickets at the other end. Still a win is a win and this win was good enough to take us to 3rd place in the league table.
