Match report The league season opens with Michael Blake once more at the helm. Harpenden were promoted having been relegated in 2004. Chingford fielded first on a flat track with pace and bounce. Rashid was still negotiating the traffic and did not appear until nearly 20 overs had been bowled. Azam, prressed into service as a new ball bowler was not a success and Whitfield, his replacement, managed 5 wides in one over. Whitfield did find a straight one to bowl one opener but by then Harpenden were off to a flier with an opening stand of 40 at 6 an over. Pace was taken off the ball and some control was exerted. More importantly, wickets started to come regularly including the removal of the remaining 50 scoring opener. Harpenden struggled to match the scoring rate of the opening overs and were in danger of not using their 45 overs up. In the end they succeeded in batting out the overs but failed to post a score of 270 plus that was probably the mimimum required in these conditions.
Chingford's innings did not have the same sort of flier but after 5 overs, Joslin and Whitfield had increased the scoring rate to 1 a ball. They kept this level of scoring throughout their partnership. Whitfield scored the faster and reached his 50 off 42 balls. Joslin's 50 took about 62 balls but he quickly caught Whitfield up. At the halfway point, both had just passed 70 and despite a number of early extras, both could reach 100 before the winning target was met. However, Joslin called for a tight single and was run out. The pair's opening stand was worth 179 and Joslin's innings was scored off 78 balls. A feature of the partnership was the insistance of both players to stick to playing strokes rather than revert to hitting. Careful batting followed the loss of a wicket and the scoring rate dropped but was not a cause for concern. Whitfield then uncharacteristically launched into a hit and skied a catch. He departed having made 80 off 77 balls. Securing a win was left to Ross who waited until scorew were level before hitting the first six of the innings.
