Match report A useful looking B team visited Potters Barr for our second league match. The wicket prepared was on one side of the square giving a short boundary on one side and a long one on the other. Chingford won the toss and chose to bat. Some erratic bowling and a fast outfield saw the new ball race to the boundary as our opening pair scored at around 8 an over. The introduction of more mature bowlers bowling spin, helped to slow down our scoring rate, helped by the loss of Joslin, Coyte and Joyce. Whitfield continued to show aggression when the ball was there to be hit and a more subdued than usual Baldock helped place Chingford in a position from which they could launch a last 10 overs assault on the bowling in an attempt to get us close to 300. The assault stalled. Although Whitfield got to his 100, he fell, along with Rashid and a target of 250 seemed more realistic. 3 wickets fell in the last 2 overs and we didn't even manage that.
There was clearly something in the wicket for the slow bowlers as their spinners got the ball to turn and bounce awkwardly. Blake, Baldock and Rashid did their bit to try and get the shine off the ball ready for the spinners as the Barr batters scored at seven an over. Thorne was held back to enable an experiment with Joslin bowling his slow medium swingers. Taking pace off the ball was clearly the way to go as Joslin bowled a decent line and length and claimed the first wicket, caught behind. After Joslin finished his excellent spell, MacGregor switched ends to get Thorne into the attack. The No3 bat and the remaining opener batted positively and sensibly against the slow bowlers, using their feet. Neither spinner was allowed to get on top and our Plan A was not working. Blakey returned to pick up a late consolation wicket but in truth, these two batted very well and we never got the chance to bowl at their lower order.
