Match report The first league game of the year saw Chingford defeat Harlow by five wickets on a good batting track. Skipper Rob Runciman has won every toss this year and this was no exception as he asked a rueful Harlow skipper to bat first. The plan looked to have backfired initially with the first five overs disappearing for 40 runs as the bowlers struggled with their line, length and run-ups. Mike Lyon was called on early to stem the flow of runs in what was turning out to be an exercise in damage limitation. However it was the spinners that turned the game around for Chingford, with first James Runciman ( 2/39 from 14 overs ) and then Paul Adshead ( 4/39 from 8 overs ) bowling well in tandem with Richard MacGregor ( 1/61 from 16 overs ) to restrict Harlow to 221/9 but more importantly, getting through the overs quickly. This left what was to be a possible 49 overs for Chingford to chase down the target. Openers Matt O'sullivan and James Runciman got off to a solid start, allowing Richard Alston to do what he does best when he came in, smashing 35 runs before being run out by James Runciman. With wickets in hand Chingford were able to push on with the scoring rate and always looked likely. Robert Whitfield marked his League debut for Chingford with an impressive 43 n.o. while Steve Piper made a handy contribution of 18 runs at the death, including a masterful six over the bowler's head. James Runciman picked up the man of the match for his fine bowling and 72 runs at the top of the order.
