Chingford Cricket Club Sun B v Harrow Town on Sun 23 Jul 2006 at 1:30
Chingford Cricket Club Won 22 runs

Match report Back to league cricket and a match against struggling Harrow Town saw 2nd team all-rounder Steve Piper make a rare Sunday appearance and Martin Steel, after his batting last week for the Cs, playing his first Sunday League match. Myles Joyce, shortly before packing his bags for a holiday that will see him miss three weekends of cricket, completed a weekend's batting with his second duck in as many days. Today he managed to edge the ball into his pads and the bowler held the catch. Steve Piper's sharp single was too sharp for Peter Joslin and Truptesh Patel, after hitting a couple of quality drives was given out lbw by Richard MacGregor. After Marc Fletcher knicked a wide one to the keeper, Chingford were in a lot of trouble. Fortunatly Piper was in good form and completed his 50 and with Graem Peters, hoped to post a reasonable total. A good slow left arm spinner settled in and Piper knicked one to slip. With plenty of overs still to bat, 7th wicket pair Peters and Nasser Rashid had the job of making sure we batted the overs out. With the pitch taking turn at both ends, they managed to keep the scoreboard ticking over. With 10 overs left and MacGregor next man in, they tried to accelerate the scoring. Rashid miss-hit to cover, and MacGregor came in at the ideal time to try and get us close to 200. He got a good stride in to the left armer and his forward defence found slip in an identical manner to Piper, to be dismissed first ball. Peters perished soon after and it was left to last wicket pair Blake and Thorne to bat the overs out. They came together at 148-9 and benefited from the return of the seamers to enable us to post a challenging total.
Piper with the new ball beat the bat, found the edge and went for runs so he was changed for MacGregor. At the other end, Peter Joslin, fresh from not having batted, settled into an excellent line and length plus some gentle movement. He picked up three wickets, helped by a Patel slip catch before finishing his spell. They had one good opening bat who hung around, to steady things after MacGregor removed 2 batters in successive balls early in his spell. The openor survived a run out when a direct throw from Piper looked like it had done the trick. MacGregor bowled straight through without further success but kept the lid on the run rate and turned the odd ball. With the wicket taking spin, the start of the Thorne spell was the one that we were waiting for. With greater pressure being put on the opener who had by now passed 50, Thorny drew him out of his crease and Peters completed the stumping. Peters claimed a second stumping off Thorne the next over but the square leg umpire saw it differently. The lower order continued to try and hit Thorne but the stumping survivor trying to repeat an earlier 4, hit the ball down to Martin Steel at deep mid wicket who clung onto the catch just inside the boundary. Piper returned to clean up the blacksocks and the game was won.
